Physical Pixel Portraits

Painting has ceded much ground to digital art over the last generation, just as it ceded much ground to photography decades before that. I see among the virtuous facets of paint that neither computers nor cameras can easily replicate is paint’s physicality; its tactility, dimensionality, and even sculpturalness. I aim to reclaim some ground for painting by re-presenting in paint a fundamental facet of digitality: the pixel, and the unique ways those “move”, in stuttering blurs, jolting and jittering, glitchy gaps, and dissolving from their inherent ephemerality and lossiness.
